Smart Kids with Learning Disabilities

Biography:

I am a licensed psychologist in New York City and I am on the faculty at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and part of the Children's Evaluation and Rehabilitation Center. I received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania. From there, I attended Fordham University where I earned a Masters Degree in Education, a Professional Diploma and my Ph.D. in psychology. While at Fordham, I was mentored by the renowned Rosa Hagin Ph.D. Throughout graduate school I received in-depth training in Dr. Hagin's (and Dr. Silver's) early identification/intervention program called SEARCH and TEACH. After graduate school, I co-authored a chapter with Dr. Rosa A. Hagin on diagnosing attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD): the chapter is featured in ADHD: Achieving success in school and in life.

My areas of specialty include neuropsychological disorders such as learning disabilities, attention deficit disorders, pervasive developmental disorders and social emotional disorders. Areas of expertise include diagnosis, counseling, and remediation of learning problems.

After I earned my doctorate, I was the learning specialist for 3 years at Andrus Children's Center, a residential treatment center for emotionally disturbed children. One of my responsibilities was to work with teachers to refine the curriculum so that each classroom was tailored for children who had special learning needs. I also worked individually with those children whose reading levels were 3 to 5 years below grade level. I worked with the children for 2 years and I was able to improve each of their reading levels significantly when no one before had been successful.

Currently, I spend three days a week at Albert Einstein College of Medicine on the pediatric unit. My responsibilities include psychodiagnostic evaluations as well as individual and group counseling for children with HIV and AIDS.

During the two days that I am not at the hospital, I have a private practice in Manhattan. I work with children and adolescents from the leading independent schools in Manhattan and Riverdale for both testing and counseling. In private practice, I conduct thorough psychodiagnostic evaluations, which include psychological, educational, neuropsychological, and social emotional components. I also work individually with children who are learning disabled helping them develop certain neuropsychological skills while teaching them to read, organize, and write. I have also developed and run therapeutic groups.

I am a member of the professional advisory board of the national organization Smart Kids with Learning Disabilities. I contribute to their newsletter and participated in a program for Smart Kids with Learning Disabilities when they cosponsored a forum on learning disabilities and psychodiagnostic evaluations with the University of Connecticut.

In the past, I appeared as a guest on the cable television show "Dr. Carol Goldberg" where I discussed learning disabilities and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
